Its compact and unique layout is what makes Medway among the most challenging courses in the region.

In October of 1901, the 98 odd acres of land located along the Maribyrnong River was sold to Thomas Williamson, a successful grazier who had properties near Yea within Victoria. The land was planned to be used for fattening cattle prior to selling them in markets in Melbourne markets. Because of the health issues of his son also Thomas Williamson, Williamson (Snr) must relocate the family members to more temperate climate and put the property under the hands by his daughters, who resided in Melbourne. His daughters weren’t keen on taking care of the property, and after Tom (Jnr) went back to Melbourne about 15 years later, following his father’s death, he discovered the land strewn with boxthorns and the noxious plants. It took him more than 12 months to completely remove the land, as was legally required when it was in use.

In 1934, in the Footscray Bowling Club, the Williamsons were part of discussions about the deficiency of sporting opportunities within the Western Suburbs. They Williamsons had to figure out the best way to utilize the area, and the notion of the possibility of a golf course was discussed.

Following this discussion, Tom Williamson contacted Stanley Green an attorney and an active member at the Kingston Heath Golf Club, as well as The Morcom Brothers (greenkeepers at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club) and suggested starting a new company and building a golf course on the site. Stanley Green, originally from Maidstone located on the Medway River in Kent, England and named the company and the golf course “Medway” in memory of his English roots. In November 1934 Medway Golf Pty Ltd was established with the intention of developing the land located in Omar Street, Maidstone, to be an “temporary golf course”. In January 1935, the Morcom Brothers were commissioned to construct the course. It was completed in July 1936.

Thomas Williamson became the first manager of Medway Golf Pty Ltd, collecting green fees and storing buggies and machinery in the bluestone dairy of the original farm property. It was the Medway Public Golf Links (with only a single trees on its property) began the public on August 31, 1935 at a cost of two shillings per 18 golf holes. When the course was first opened, golf course Eric Duffy, a young professional from the Yarra Yarra Golf Club, was named as the first professional.
