In fact, most situations call for drivers and passengers to remain in their vehicle until assistance arrives. Such is the case with highway or interstate roadside emergencies.
Highway traffic travels at high speeds and many drivers are distracted by their phones, stereos, kids, and more. For this reason, it is not recommended to exit your vehicle if you are on a freeway unless it is absolutely necessary. If you must get out on the highway, proceed to the farthest point away from the road. If you were just involved in a car wreck, remain in the vehicle until law enforcement or paramedics arrive to block off traffic.

Generally, when a car begins to breakdown, the driver has time to pull it over to the shoulder of the road.
