Getting your vehicle towed is always a hassle. The fact that your car has broken down in the middle of somewhere makes it incredibly inconvenient while waiting for a tow to arrive is naturally frustrating, but things could get even worse – your car could end up being further damaged during the towing process.
Not everyone is aware that towing a broken-down vehicle could end up causing additional damage beyond whatever caused the breakdown. Therefore, you should take the time to make some adjustments to your vehicle to ensure it is safe for towing, otherwise you could be looking at more damage.
Check out these three ways to make sure your vehicle doesn’t get damaged when getting towed:
1. Release the emergency brake
Whenever your call for a tow truck, you know your car isn’t going anywhere on its own accord, so it makes sense to put the brake on. However, this is could end up damaging the car should it be towed using the traditional two wheels on the road method.
When taking off the brake, the car is safe to tow with two wheels on the road, ensuring no damage to your brakes occur. This can be done in park too, although you need to ensure the non-driving wheels are on the ground when dealing with automatic transmission. Manual transmission vehicles are fine to be towed on any wheels with the brake off when in park.
If being towed via a flatbed, the brakes are less of an issue as no wheels are on the road, but you want to ensure it’s off when the vehicle is hoisted – a good tow truck driver should inform you of this though.
2. Roll Up Windows
It’s an often-overlooked aspect when getting towed but make sure to wind up all the windows in the vehicle. This prevents any dust and particles being kicked up from the back of the tow truck and into the vehicle, which could cause damage to upholstery and require cleaning.
3. Take Photographs
Taking photos is always recommended before getting towed. With most of us carrying a smartphone in our pockets, it’s easy to get some quick snaps of the condition of your vehicle prior to it being picked up the tow.
This gives you some degree of protection should damage occur to your vehicle. While it won’t prevent it from happening, it ensures you have evidence that your car was damaged when it was being towed.
