DISC Velodrome
The Joe Ciavola Velodrome which is sometimes referred to as the DISC Velodrome is the main indoor velodrome in Victoria.
It was established in 2004 and became the training facility for teams that competed in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in the year 2006. DISC is still the training location to The VIS track team. It has hosted numerous events, including to the Melbourne Cup on Wheels and The Austral, and numerous Australian and World records have been established on its board.
The track for timber is 250 metres long , with the highest level of banking at 42 degrees.
The stadium is named in honor of Joe Ciavola, who competed as an amateur in the Empire (Commonwealth) Games in 1962 in Perth winning as a professional at the Melbourne Cup on Wheels from scratch in 1965. He also won the Sixes from Adelaide in 1965, and Whyalla in 1967.
Joe Ciavola was elected President of Victoria Cycling in 1997, his experience and determination led to the creation of the DISC indoor velodrome within the space that was the Northcote Velodrome.
Venue Management
Joe Ciavola Velodrome is located at the Darebin International Sports Complex, 281 Darebin Road, Thornbury. It’s about 15km north-east within Melbourne CBD. Melbourne CBD.
DISC is a part of the recreation and sports facilities run by Darebin City Council. Darebin City Council.
Event Days And Other Track Closures
Auscycling will try their best to ensure that scheduled DISC sessions on track aren’t disrupted. In the season of track championships and during the run towards track nationals user bookings can be changed or canceled to be able to accommodate the events.
All through the year DISC is closed during the year for other maintenance and events that could affect some reservations made by venue users. Auscycling will notify users in advance of any interruptions and help patrons with alternative booking times if requested.
