Running out of gas is almost a right of passage for most drivers. Nobody wants to experience it but it’s inevitably going to happen to a large percentage of drivers, especially those that are new to driving, being one of the most common causes for vehicle breakdown.
So, as many people are unfortunately going to experience running out gas during a drive, it helps to know the necessary steps to safely refuel. Here’s the 5 step process for refueling when you run out of gas!
1. Safely Pull Over
Should you notice the gas is running out before you sputter to a standstill, be sure to safely pull over before doing anything else. You ideally want to stop on the shoulder of the road, but if you run out of gas in the middle of a lane then it’s just a case of staying calm and waiting for help. Always turn the hazard lights on and wait for help.
2. Call a Towing Service to Get Gas Delivered
One of the simplest ways to get your car refuelled after running out of gas is to call a tow truck service! Yes, tow trucks are mainly used for towing broken down vehicles but a core service they also provide is delivering gas to stranded drivers!
3. Call a Friend
If you don’t have access to a tow truck company or lack roadside assistance coverage, then it’s a good idea to call a friend to see whether they can help you out. This is mostly reserved for breakdowns near you house or work, as you can only expect someone to drive a certain distance.
Either get them to bring some spare gas or ask them to drive you to the nearest gas station and back to your vehicle.
4. Check Your Phone for a Nearby Gas Station
If you don’t have access to anyone that can come give you gas or drive you to a gas station, you’re going to need to find one yourself. The easiest way to do this is to check your phone for a local gas station, with Google being capable of finding one using your phone’s GPS.
5. Only Walk to a Gas Station if its Safe
Now, you may feel you can comfortably walk to the gas station but there are many risks of doing so. Highways or freeways should never be crossed on foot to get to a gas station, especially if it’s dark, as the risks are far too high to make it worthwhile.
Similarly, be mindful of unsafe areas to walk, such as poorly lit roads where a driver may not see you walking until it is too late. Because of this, it’s always recommended that you avoid walking to a gas station in the dark.
