Thornbury Picture House

Thornbury Picture House It is managed by residents who are enthusiastic about film and want to bring an independent, local movie house to Thornbury.

Screening a variety of new releases, documentariesand classics and cult movies as well as children’s films as well as festival highlight films, we’re sure that we’ve got your back. We’re proud to support local filmmakers in every way feasible and make our screens available to short film screenings casting and crew events , and film premieres. We have just launched our unique festival Northern Lights Film Festival with a particular focus on short local films.

Thornbury Picture House is a retro-styled local cinema and bar that is designed specifically for the suburb of North-side.

The building served in the form of a vintage furniture shop which was also one the first petrol stations with a drive-through, therefore the proprietor Gus Berger restored its exterior with the same roots in mind. The original tile signs that promised services and “motor spirit” – a romantic name that was used for the first time to describe what is now referred to as petrol – were found in the midst of decades of poor painting jobs. The vintage petrol bowser on the front has been painted with the picture of the flying 1965 Ford Thunderbird from Thelma and Louise.

Inside, all the glamour of Art Deco action happens. The bar is furnished with restored 1930s-vintage cinema seats that Berger tracked back to the former Carlton Movie House. Walls are lined with images of the classic Hollywood as well as beyond David Lynch, Jack Nicholson, Agnes Varda.

There’s also the 57-seat theater, which is a modern take on vintage style. In any given week, you can anticipate three to four new release films.

Beyond the typical snacks like choc-tops and popcorn, this bar is a little more local as well. Simple menu, prepared in partnership with Umberto, a fine Italian restaurant just down the road and includes meatballs, antipasto along with calamari, polenta chips, and meatballs. The drinks come at Three Ravens, Hawkers and Noisy Ritual as well as the possibility of brewing a batch of coffee with Padre. As a tribute to the building’s past it also has the cocktail Motor Spirit.
