Our History
St Vincent de Paul Parish Primary School is located in Strathmore. It was founded by the Sisters of Charity opened St Vincent de Paul School, North Essendon (as it was called at the time) on January 26, 1937. It wasn’t till 1941 when it was that the Parish of St Vincent de Paul, North Essendon, was established and in 1943 the region was renamed Strathmore.
The School has been through 8 Building Stages in the past. Our most recent construction project has resulted in two new classrooms as well as the Learning Resource Area known as known as the Kirinari Centre.
It was on the 26th of January, 1937 when The Sisters of Charity opened St Vincent de Paul School, North Essendon (as it was named at the time). The first sisters to oversee the Catholic education of the 40 students included Ms. M. Avellino Walsh, Sr M. Helana Parker, Sr M. Majella O’Shea and Sr M. Frances Donovan with Carmel Considine appointed Sister in charge in 1938.
Over the next sixty years, enrollment of students has risen to reach 680 students in 1960-61. There were 11 teachers and classes of between 80-90 students. The current enrolment is about 400 students. We have 16 classes of 20.-28 students.
It wasn’t before 1941, that it was in 1941 that the Parish of St Vincent de Paul, North Essendon was established and in 1943, the area was renamed Strathmore. It was the Columban Fathers administered the Parish until 1946, when Fr Durkin was appointed as the Parish Priest. This is an interesting point to observe the fact that Strathmore Parish has only had five Parish Priests, with Fr Frank Larsen appointed in 1977 Fr Dom De Giorgio in 1992 Fr Peter Ray in 2007 and Fr Tony Doran in 2021.
